PETALING JAYA: Educators must have a deep and unbiased understanding of the Israel-Palestine conflict to appropriately educate students on the matter, says prominent intellectual Chandra Muzaffar.

He said teachers should be focused on seeking the truth instead of getting caught up in subjective interpretations. With children as young as eight seen participating in protests over the conflict, he said it is important to also consider their capacity to understand complex issues.

However, an MP from Perikatan Nasional, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, called for clarity about what would constitute a “balanced explanation”. He said the goal of the solidarity week was to show support for Palestine and “not both parties”. “It’s important to clarify these differences to people, as many might not fully grasp these distinctions.” Chandra said, adding that it was also important to nurture critical thinking in children.“Education is key, and it’s crucial to convey to them that actions such as carrying guns or stepping on the flag of Israel are inappropriate behaviours.”

“The book highlights that throughout its history, Palestine has been a diverse region, home to multiple ethnic and religious communities, and not exclusively belonging to any single group.”
