A dashboard camera footage of another car, which has gone viral on the internet, showed the tree falling on the passing car in just two seconds. Bolstered by heavy rain, the strong river current eroded the riverbank and at 3pm, the bank slipped. This caused part of Jalan Paya Terubong to cave in, sending two parked cars down along with it.Commenting on the fallen tree tragedy, Batu Lanchang assemblyman Ong Ah Teong said the decades-old tree was transplanted there in 2018.
Penang Botanic Gardens curator Dr Saw Leng Guan urged MBPP to “treat trees as living things” and rethink how people can coexist with trees in Penang.
