He said that the government has made a conscious decision under NAP 2020 to implement the new Malaysian Vehicle Project, which will emphasise research and development and the incorporation of the latest technologies.
Dr Mahathir said that this is in order for Malaysia to be competitive in both the domestic and global markets. "New technology clusters as well as a new expert workforce would be developed consequently, especially in the field of automotive engineering," said Dr Mahathir. He added that the new Malaysian Vehicle Project is expected to contribute significantly to the nation's economic development through its support for both upstream and downstream industries.
"This will create a demand for other related materials such as high-grade steel, plastics, rubber and petrochemical products which will stimulate further growth of these sub-sectors," said Dr Mahathir at the NAP 2020 launch on Friday .
