PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya coach K. Devan has leapt to Washington Brandao’s defence.

The Brazilian striker failed to convert a spot kick in the 1-1 draw with Sabah at the Petaling Jaya Stadium last week, which extended the Phoenix’s winless run to four matches since the Super League resumed last month.

They are currently 10th in the 12-team standings with six points after seven matches and with four more to play, they need to buck up when they travel to Melaka on Sunday. “Brandao is our team’s penalty taker. This thing happens to even the best player in the world,” said Devan.“We muffed the penalty and later Safee missed a sitter. The players did well but the result was disappointing.

“We get something against Melaka after dropping points at home. It will be a tough game but we need to be positive as we did not lose the last match. We must build on from that performance.” Against Sabah, PJ City took the lead through Brazilian defender Elizeu Araujo in the 51st minute before the Premier League champions scored a late equaliser in the 87th minute through Serbian striker Rodoljub Paunovic.“If they had kept their focus until the final whistle we could have won against Sabah. We also need to defend better while under pressure. We will hit the training hard to prepare against Melaka,” he added.
