There are approximately 400,000 hospital beds in Indonesia, and 30 percent of them are allocated for Covid-19 patients.
Outside Java, the hospital bed occupancy rates have reached 86 percent in Lampung province, 85 per cent in East Kalimantan province, and 79 percent in West Papua province. Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan admitted during a virtual press conference on Thursday that the spread of the Delta variant of the coronavirus is hard to control and is up to six times more contagious than the Alpha variant.
"Most of them came back through legitimate ways, but there are some who managed to enter through unknown ways, without being checked. This has contributed to the spread of the virus in the country," he added. On Friday, Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy told media that the restrictions will be extended until the end of this month.
The senior minister also assured the public that the country's vaccine stock is sufficient for the entire population. Indonesia has secured 480.7 million shots of vaccines so far.
