The Statistics Department announced on Wednesday the Consumer Price Index increased by 1% in December to 122.3 compared with 121.1 a year ago.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said in a statement that out of 552 items covered in CPI, 360 items showed an increase in December 2019 from a year ago. He added 137 items declined while 55 items were unchanged. “The increase in the overall index was driven by the index of miscellaneous goods & services ; food & non-alcoholic beverages ; housing, water, electricity, gas & other fuels ; education ; communication ; furnishings, household equipment & routine household maintenance and health , ” he said.
On a monthly basis, CPI rose 0.2% from November 2019, mainly due to food & non-alcoholic beverages and restaurants & hotels .On a quarterly basis, the CPI rose by 0.3% from the third quarter.The department said Kuala Lumpur's recorded a 1.5% increase in the CPI in December; Selangor and Putrajaya and Johor .The highest increase was recorded by Johor followed by Kuala Lumpur and Selangor & Putrajaya , surpassed the national index of 1.7% in December 2019.
