A local official said dozens of people have been killed in the High Atlas mountains.

RABAT: A powerful earthquake in Morocco’s High Atlas mountains toppled buildings and sent people fleeing their homes in several cities late yesterday, residents said, and a local official said dozens of people had been killed.

The local Goud.ma news site reported up to 50 people had died, citing unnamed officials in the earthquake-hit region. Further west, near Taroudant, teacher Hamid Afkar said he had fled his home and there had been aftershocks following the initial quake. The US Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 6.8 and said it was at a relatively shallow depth of 18.5km.The quake struck just after 11pm.In Marrakech, some houses in the tightly packed old city had collapsed and people were working hard by hand to remove debris while they waited for heavy equipment, said resident Id Waaziz Hassan.
