Crowds flock to see McIlroy, Woods as British Open returns to Northern Ireland

18 July 2019

A local and former champion Darren Clarke will hit the first tee shot of the 148th Open at 6.35am local time with the star attraction of Tiger Woods and home favourite Rory McIlroy to come later in the day for record crowds. A return to Northern Ireland was ruled out for many years by “The Troubles” ― a 30-year period of politically and religiously motivated violence.

“To be able to have this tournament here again, I think it speaks volumes of where the country and where the people that live here are now.” However, McIlroy hopes the buzz around the tournament means he will not feel the pressure once play gets under way.
