MELAKA: The unprecedented hike in Covid-19 cases in the state is due to mass screenings of foreign workers at factories, says Datuk Rahmad Mariman.

The Health and Anti-Drug committee chairman said that the steep increase in cases is not due to locals, adding that screenings had been intensified at several factories in Melaka.

Melaka recorded 835 Covid-19 cases on Saturday , while Selangor topped the list with 4,277 cases followed by Kuala Lumpur with 1,398 cases. On Wednesday, Melaka implemented a 14-day enhanced movement control order involving eight factories in the Ayer Keroh Industrial Area. Melaka Standard Operating Procedure Compliance Committee chairman Ramli Mohd Ali said the enhanced MCO enforced following the increase in Covid-19 positive cases in the area.

He said five clusters involving workers at the industrial area were also detected, namely the Jalan Usaha 7 Cluster, Jalan Usaha 2 Cluster, Ayer Keroh Industrial Cluster, Jalan P1 Ayer Keroh Cluster and Jalan Sri Raya Cluster.
