KOTA KINABALU: A total of 1,063 or 61% of the 1,752 new Covid-19 cases recorded in Sabah on Saturday (Aug 14) are close contacts of existing cases, says Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

The state's Covid-19 spokesperson also said that 31% or 538 of the new cases were recorded from symptomatic screenings.

Kota Kinabalu remains the district with the highest new cases, registering 436 infections, followed by Tawau , Penampang , Sandakan and Tuaran . On this, Masidi said that the high case numbers – a 98-case increase from the 1,654 new cases recorded on Friday – are a reminder for all to follow the standard operating procedures strictly, especially at enclosed places like supermarkets and restaurants.

"This is also one of the reasons we want to introduce the full vaccination requirement for those working and patronising these premises , to reduce sporadic infection risks at place commonly visited by the public," he said on Saturday. The state Local Government and Housing Minister added that as of Friday, 44.6% of the targeted adult population in Sabah have received the first dose while 20.8% are fully inoculated.
