Tawau GOF Battalion 14 commanding officer Supt Mohd Yacob Murad said about 239,700 packets of cigarettes of various brands were confiscated during the operation.“The 38-year-old Filipino who is an IMM13 holder was apprehended, and is suspected to have been stationed there to keep a lookout for vehicles coming and exiting the route, ” he said in a statement Tuesday .The GOF team then continued inspecting the surrounding areas and reached an un-numbered premises with no one inside.
Further inspection found the cigarettes in several boxes, as well as a van believed to be used to deliver the smuggled goods to markets in and outside of the Tawau district. The seized cigarettes are estimated to be worth RM3.39mil after tax, and other confiscated items include a set of walkie talkie, a mobile phone, and the van with its keys, totalling RM3.47mil in seizure.
All seized items and the detained suspect were brought to Tawau police station for further action and investigations under Section 135 of Customs Act 1967.
