PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun , who is tipped to be the new Dewan Rakyat Speaker, has resigned as Election Commission chairman."The resignation has been consented to by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong through a letter dated June 30," said the statement on Thursday .
The commission said that in line with Article 114 of the Federal Constitution, EC deputy chairman Dr Azmi Shahrom would assume the duties of chairman."The EC would like to record its deepest appreciation and thanks to Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun for his contribution and service as chairman," it said.
