Ministry of Communications has voiced dissatisfaction with the contractors of the National Digital Network Plan Phase 1 project in the rural areas of Sabah and Sarawak. Its Deputy Minister, Teo Nie Ching revealed that despite the project’s supposed completion in 2022, it is yet to be finished.

According to Bernama, Teo said that her Ministry frequently visits the 2 states to monitor the project’s progress, but currently, it’s still under an extension of time . She added that those not completed under EOT are the ones we are dissatisfied with because this project was supposed to be completed in 2022, but there are still unfinished parts.

Teo stressed that the Ministry may impose penalties on the contractors for the delay. For reference, in Sabah and Sarawak, over 20 per cent of work is still incomplete. JENDELA, launched in September 2020, aims to establish robust and affordable digital connectivity with quality broadband coverage and provide internet access across all layers of society throughout the country. Phase 1 of the initiative, which ran from 2020 to 2022, has achieved its initial targets, including reaching 7.74 million premises, achieving 96.9 per cent 4G coverage in populated areas and a broadband speed of 116.03 Mbps.
