PETALING JAYA: From staying at comfortable hotels during their holiday in India, a Malaysian family's getaway turned into a nightmarish experience after the South Asian country went into lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Jetinder Singh, 28, said that he and his extended family – comprising 16 Malaysians from the ages of seven to 74 – are currently stuck in a hotel in Amritsar.

Jetinder said another Malaysian there managed to find them alternate accommodation for the time being. "We are afraid that we won't get sick from Covid-19 – but because of the conditions here," said the engineer from Kuala Lumpur."It is very depressing. We all want to go home and are waiting for someone to rescue us," he said.

"We never expected such a thing would happen. It is our first time in India for many of us but it has turned into a nightmare," he said, adding that they are toughing things out together as a family.
