BEIJING: The Thick fog that has shrouded most parts of north China over the past few days will be dispersed on Wednesday (Dec 11) as a cold wave is sweeping across the region.

The National Meteorological Centre renewed a yellow alert for fog, warning that visibility in parts of Beijing, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Hubei, Liaoning, Sichuan, Xinjiang will be reduced to less than 200mor even 50m on Tuesday .

The presence of fog was mainly due to unfavorable weather conditions including high humidity, temperature inversion and stable air, said Wang Zifa, a researcher with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. But this week, areas all over China will also be affected, including Shanghai, with temperatures predicted to hit as low as 3 degrees Celsius downtown, with chances of frost farther out from the city centre. Temperatures are estimated to pick up a bit on Thursday, reaching around 13 degrees Celsius, with a mild drop down to 10 degrees Celsius for Friday.
