The Sabah Wildlife Department’s Wildlife Rescue Unit went to Kampung Perancangan on Friday after a villager claimed to have spotted the leopard in the area.
Dr Sen Nathan, who oversees the unit, said the team set up a trap, with constant patrolling by WRU throughout the night.“At 3.45am on Saturday, the clouded leopard was seen with a chicken in its mouth attempting to go back to a small forested area from the village,” Dr Sen said.“The animal was thin with an estimated age of less than 12 months old. It likely became separated from its mother,” he said.
Dr Sen said the animal – one of the 10 fully protected species under Sabah’s wildlife conservation laws – was taken to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park for further treatment.
