PETALING JAYA: Getting athletes to believe in themselves is the key.

And that’s what national women’s head coach Chan Chong Ming has been drumming into the heads of Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean in training and he hopes it will translate into a good show in their first Olympic Games.

Mei Kuan-Meng Yean will play their first match against world No. 6 Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu in Group A tomorrow at Musashino Forest Sports Plaza. It will be then followed with a match against world No. 1 Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota of Japan and world No. 14 Lauren Smith-Chloe Birch of England. Only the top two pairs will make it to the knockout stage and on paper, it seems to be tough for the Malaysians.“I believe they have what it takes to fight against the top players this time but what I think is not enough. I want to see that same self-belief and desire to win in them too,” said Chong Ming. This year, the duo showed a different side in them en route to beating Greysia-Apriyani in the group stage of the World Tour Finals in Bangkok in January.
