China's weather service warned Friday that Typhoon Saola may be the strongest to make landfall in southern China's Pearl River Delta region, which comprises the cities of Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Macau and others, for more than seventy years.

"Saola may become the strongest typhoon to make landfall in the Pearl River Delta since 1949", the year of the founding of the current Chinese state, the country's Central Meteorological Observatory said in a post on Weibo.

By 2 pm , Saola was 140 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong, packing sustained winds of 210 km per hour. "Of course, it's going to affect our life," said Wu Wenlai, 43, who runs a restaurant in a Shenzhen suburb."My eldest son was planning to fly to Chengdu today for university and his flight has been cancelled now," Wu added.

Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018 -- the last time Hong Kong issued a T10 warning -- left more than 300 people injured in Hong Kong, shredding trees and unleashing floods.
