SIBU: A Chinese national who passed herself as a medium, pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court in Kuching on Friday (May 10), after she was charged with cheating a local woman of RM180,000 for prayer rituals to rid her house of evil spirits.

Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi denied bail for the accused, Li Yufen, 34, and ordered that she be remanded at the Puncak Borneo prison.Zubaidah fixed June 11 for case management.

According to the charge sheet, the accused, along with two others still at large, had at about 11am on April 11 at the MJC township, Kuching, deceived a 55-year old woman into believing that her house was haunted nine years ago. The accused told the victim that her son would die, if he did not marry an evil spirit which was still roaming in her house.

In order for her son to avoid this fate, the accused told the woman that she would hold prayers and perform an exorcism to remove the bad luck from her home. However, the woman would have to surrender her savings of RM180,000, as well jewelleries.She was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Sarawak commercial crime investigation department chief Supt Mustafa Kamal Gani Abdullah advised the public to be cautious to avoid being cheated by her two accomplices, who were still at large.
