Let's review our subsidy policy so we can combat smuggling | New Straits TimesWhile the total worth of smuggling into and out of Malaysia is not known, the quantum is sizeable given the high price differential for commodities, such as petrol and rice, between the country and its neighbours. How much the smuggling value? But how much monies we spend on the subsidies? If we cannot afford the subsidies, then do away with it. It will go back to public. Can they afford price increase? My guess is smuggling is low, subsidies paid is high and public cannot absorb it now. Insensitive to the current, more urgent issues from hand. Its logical, from an economics standpoint but, if done around now (2-3 yrs), it would destroy lives and livelihoods.
