Trump has called the hydroxychloroquine combination 'one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine'. FMTNews

US President Donald Trump announced he has been taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventative measure.

“Treatment with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin were strongly associated with increased risk of death,” Dr Howard Burris, president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology , said in a briefing with reporters on the results. “Taking the combination gives a three-times increased risk of dying within 30 days of any cause,” Dr Jeremy Warner of Vanderbilt University Medical System told reporters.

Warner and colleagues analysed data on 925 patients with cancer who became infected with the coronavirus between March and April. Some 13% of the patients died within 30 days of their diagnosis. The US Food and Drug Administration has allowed healthcare providers to prescribe the drugs for Covid-19 through an emergency-use authorisation, but has not approved the treatment.

He said carefully designed trials are needed to clarify the risks and benefits of these drugs alone or in combination.
