Bongkah ais berukuran 1,550 kilometer persegi itu terpisah daripada `Brunt Ice Shelf’ setebal 150 meter sedekad lalu selepas para penyelidik mula-mula menemukan keretakan besar pada rak bongkah ais Brunt. Menurut ahli glasiologi BAS, Dominic Hodgson, kejadian itu sudah dijangkakan dan merupakan sebahagian proses perubahan semula jadi Brunt Ice Shelf.Stesen Penyelidikan Britain, Halley VI yang memantau keadaan bongkah ais terapung setiap hari dilaporkan tidak terjejas dengan kejadian tersebut.
