China has unveiled a wide-ranging plan to phase out non-degradable plastic products in major consumption sectors, vowing to effectively curb plastic pollution in major cities in five years.
The country is expected to significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste disposed by landfills and bring plastic pollution under effective control in major Chinese cities by 2025, according to a guideline made public yesterday. As for household chemicals containing plastic microbeads, prohibition is to be imposed on production by the end of this year and then sales two years later.
The use of non-degradable plastic bags, for example, is expected to vanish in some major consuming sectors, including shopping malls, supermarkets and restaurant take-out services, in metropolises first by the end of this year and then in all major cities across the country and all urban areas in the country’s coastal region by the end of 2022.Restrictions will be introduced and extended to these urban areas by 2022 before a complete ban by the end of 2025, according to the document.
