Officials from President Joe Biden’s administration have touted the programme as one of the biggest investments ever in US clean manufacturing.
The seven proposed hubs involving companies ranging from Exxon Mobil to Amazon were selected, with their projects spanning 16 states from Pennsylvania to California. Biden’s administration has set a target to increase clean hydrogen output to 10 million metric tonnes by 2030, and 50 million by 2050, up five-fold from today – and considers the fuel an ideal option for cutting emissions from tough-to-decarbonise industrial users like steel and cement.
The hub selections will now kick off a long process that includes multiple phases, from design and development to permitting, financing, and construction. The Texas hub, called HyVelocity, is led by major industry players, including Exxon, Chevron, Air Liquide, Mitsubishi Power Americas, Orsted, AES, and Sempra Infrastructure. Amazon is among the hub’s expected end users.
However, US hydrogen industry players are also awaiting guidance from the treasury department on how to access additional subsidies created by last year’s Inflation Reduction Act. Those rules are expected at the end of this year.
