DANDONG: Mahkamah China hari ini memutuskan seorang ahli perniagaan Kanada, Michael Spavor menjalani hukuman penjara selama 11 tahun.
Hukuman itu dijatuhkan selepas mendapati dia bersalah kerana melakukan pengintipan pada 2018 bersama rakan senegaranya, Michael Kovrig. Spavor dan Kovrig yang merupakan bekas diplomat menghadapi pertuduhan melakukan pengintipan, Jun tahun lalu.Hukuman itu dilihat sebagai bermotif politik selepas eksekutif Huawei, Meng Wanzhou ditahan di Kanada menerusi waran ekstradisi Amerika Syarikat.
Dalam kes berasingan semalam, seorang rakyat Kanada gagal dalam rayuannya bagi mengetepikan hukuman mati atas kesalahan mengedar dadah di China. Mahkamah memutuskan hukuman itu kerana bukti pendakwaan terhadap pesalah, Robert Lloyd Schellenberg mencukupi. -AFP
