During this three-month period from February, no-one is allowed to catch the freshwater fish as it is their spawning season.

From February, no-one is allowed to catch the Temoleh, a freshwater fish, as it is their spawning season. — FilepicThe closed season for ikan tamalian or known as temoleh has started and will end in April this year, said Pahang Fisheries Department director Datuk Azahari Othman.

Azahari said the fish is possibly only found in Perak and Pahang, and mainly in the western part of the latter in Temerloh, Bera, Jerantut and Lipis. He said the fish was in high demand and can fetch between RM65 and RM100 per kg, adding that the population was dwindling and at risk of extinction.“Although breeding is conducted at the Perlok Aquaculture Development Centre in Jerantut, the numbers are insufficient and hence the prohibition on fishing during the nesting season, ” he said.
