GEORGE TOWN: Things are looking much brighter for the gold and jewellery industry, with business starting to pick up since the reopening of international borders.

According to George Lo, president of the Penang Goldsmiths and Jewellers Association, the total value of gold jewellery export has increased to RM4.48bil in 2021 from RM3.15bil in 2020.

Lo said Penang has always been the venue for jewellery and gold events due to its over 200- year-old history. “There are also many third-generation jewellery manufacturers and a Chinese temple that is 190 years old, which hosts the deity of Master of Goldsmith Wu Jin,” he said. “It is certainly a business and networking opportunity to showcase our spectacular gold jewellery collections as well as Malaysia’s excellent gold craftsmanship,” he said before launching the event.

“Stakeholders in the industry should capitalise on the vast opportunities, potential and demand for gold jewellery despite the most challenging of circumstances,” he said.
