Confirmed cases rose by 181 during the 24-hour period to early Sunday, bringing the national total to 5,635, health ministry data showed. The death toll from Covid-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus, rose to 34. New South Wales Director of Health Protection Jeremy McAnulty said there is hope that a flattening of the curve of new infections has started.Health Minister Greg Hunt warned on Saturday, however, that despite the good signs, Australians will still have to keep their distance from others for the next half a year.

Several states have also given police the power to enforce the rules via hefty on-the-spot fines and potential jail terms. Victoria’s police issued 142 fines on Saturday for breaking social distancing rules, according to officials.
