Back in March, it was rumoured that Apple would be launching new Apple M3-powered PCs by this year. The iMac is likely to get the upgrade first, followed by the MacBook Air at a later date. Now, we also have some information on one of the M3 chip's configuration.
According to Mark Gurman, there's at least one Apple M3-based Mac PC with a 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU, and 36GB of memory. It's suggested that this is the Apple M3 Pro, which would mean a slight but likely notable upgrade over its predecessor. For your info, the 14-inch MacBook Pro launched in January 2023 featuring a base variant Apple M2 Pro chip with a 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU. Based on the specs, the M3 Pro model Gurman mentioned could be a direct successor.
Besides the M2 Pro, Gurman speculates that the M3 Max could have a 14-core CPU and 40-core GPU, while the M3 Ultra would have a 28-core CPU and 80-core GPU. These high core counts would be possible because the chips are manufactured on a 3nm process. Also, the first M3-based Mac PCs are expected to arrive either at the end of 2023 or early 2024.
Overall, we can expect the Apple M3 chips to deliver a noticeable jump in performance over the Apple M2. But how big of an improvement remains to be seen. We'll keep an eye out for more updates, so make sure you stay tuned to TechNave!
