According to 9to5Mac, the Apple A17 Bionic chip for iPhone 15 series may focus more on battery life rather than processing power improvement. The information comes from a statement made by TSMC's chairman when asked about the company's 3nm chips.
Chairman Mark Liu told Bloomberg that the"3nm processes offer better performance than its 5nm chips, while requiring about 35% less power". Therefore, it's suspected that it would be the case for A17 Bionic chips, taking less power. However, there's no guarantee that will happen despite Apple using the process, as the tech giant would still end up designing the chip itself.
A few days ago, TSMC held a ceremony to kickstart the production of the new 3nm chips. The new process is expected to make its first appearance in Macs powered through a new M2 Pro chip, ahead of the A17 processor in the iPhone 15. After that, the M3 chips could also use a 3nm process. For the M2 Pro, Apple is most likely to squeeze as much power as possible from the chip.
