Bekas perdana menteri Dr Mahathir Mohamad berkata, keputusan menamakan Shafie Apdal sebagai calon perdana menteri pembangkang dipersetujui oleh Warisan, Amanah dan DAP yang bermesyuarat pada 25 Jun lalu di Kuala Lumpur.
“Dalam perbincangan, saya terbuka kepada cadangan, termasuk saya tidak dicalonkan sebagai bakal perdana menteri. Di antara cadangan yang dikemukakan ialah pencalonan Shafie Apdal sebagai perdana menteri. Pertemuan itu dihadiri Shafie, Presiden Amanah Mohamad Sabu, Setiausha Agung DAP Lim Guan Eng, Setiausaha Organisasi DAP, Loke Siew Fook, Pengerusi DAP Tan Kok Wai, Naib Pengerusi DAP M Kulasegaran, Pengerusi DAP Johor Liew Chin Tong, bekas Setiausaha Agung PPBM Marzuki Yahya dan bekas Timbalan Presiden PPBM Mukhriz.
Bahkan katanya, Shafie adalah pemimpin awal yang menjadi mangsa pentadbiran bekas perdana menteri Najib Razak.
