LONDON-based neonatologist Dr Jainab Kassim has been dubbed an “unsung hero” who commits herself to “make things better” for English proficiency-deprived rural students of Sabah.

For she was once seriously English-proficiency deprived and remembers the pain of rejection. The heroics to energise English profiency deprived rural kids in Sabah around this unusual undertaking, which had gone largely unnoticed, ignited my first curiosity. It is this unusual cause that sparked the interest to write this Special Report.
