Bangkok: Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi will this month personally defend her country at the United Nations’ top court against Gambia’s allegation that it committed genocide against the Rohingya.

The State Counsellor, who is also Foreign Minister, caused a stir when it was announced recently that she would lead Myanmar’s legal team before the International Court of Justice .

The probes include the ongoing International Criminal Court investigation, which Myanmar says it is not bound by as it did not sign the treaty establishing the court. Gambia alleges that Myanmar has violated the convention, and has asked the court to impose provisional measures to “stop Myanmar’s genocidal conduct immediately”.
