ATTORNEY-General Tommy Thomas today agreed with Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin that, under the law, the home minister had the prerogative to classify individuals or groups as terrorists. Yet, in dropping charges against 12 men accused of links to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam – more commonly known as the Tamil Tigers – the attorney-general said he was not questioning the minister’s powers, more drawing attention to a sunset clause in the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, which would have hurt the prosecution’s case.
