Some samples returned to Earth on Nasa's Apollo missions have been kept untouched, all intended to be analysed with more advanced technologies than were available during the Apollo years. – EPA pic, November 7, 2019.
The sample, numbered 73002, was collected by Apollo 17 astronauts Gene Cernan and Jack Schmitt, who drove a 4cm-wide tube into the surface of the moon to collect it, reported the Xinhua news agency, according to Nasa’s news release yesterday. “We are able to make measurements today that were just not possible during the years of the Apollo programme,” said Sarah Noble, a scientist at the Nasa headquarters in Washington D.C.
Sample 73002, as well as another numbered 73001, to be opened early next year, are part of a 60cm tube of regolith collected from a landslide deposit near Lara Crater at the Apollo 17 site.
