DAMASCUS, Sep 24 ― Eighty-six bodies have been recovered since a boat carrying migrants from Lebanon sunk off Syria’s coast, state media said Saturday, in one of the deadliest recent such shipwrecks in the eastern Mediterranean.
Lebanon, a country which hosts more than a million refugees from Syria’s civil war, has since 2019 been mired in a financial crisis branded by the World Bank as one of the worst in modern times. More than 450,000 Palestinians are registered in Lebanon with the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA.
“No one gets on these death boats lightly,” UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement. “People are taking this perilous decisions, risking their lives in search of dignity.”
