60% debt ceiling enough for now, says Tengku Zafrul

Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz says raising the debt ceiling even higher would depend on how well Malaysia fights the Covid-19 pandemic. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, November 8, 2020.

AMPLE room exists for the government to stimulate the economy with the current statutory debt ceiling of 60% of the gross domestic product , Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said. “I feel this debt-to-GDP ratio is sufficient for now. By the end of this year, our debt level is expected to reach 56% of the GDP,” he said during an interview on TV3’s Buletin Utama programme tonight.
