Save the Children memetik data Unesco pada April lalu menunjukkan 1.6 bilion pelajar tidak dibenarkan ke sekolah dan universiti sebagai langkah membendung penularan virus – kira-kira 90% daripada keseluruhan populasi pelajar di seluruh dunia. Dengan ramai orang muda perlu bekerja atau perempuan dipaksa berkahwin pada usia muda untuk menyara keluarga mereka, ia bakal menyaksikan 7 hingga 9.7 juta kanak-kanak tercicir sekolah.

“Kira-kira 10 juta kanak-kanak mungkin tidak akan kembali ke sekolah – ini ialah darurat pendidikan yang belum pernah terjadi sebelum ini dan kerajaan mesti segera melabur dalam pembelajaran,” kata Ketua Eksekutif Save the Children, Inger Ashing. “Kami tahu kanak-kanak termiskin, paling terpinggir yang sudah ketinggalan jauh mengalami kerugian terbesar – tanpa akses untuk pembelajaran jarak jauh – atau sebarang pendidikan – selama setengah tahun akademik,” kata Ashing.
