Xander Schauffele is no longer the Majors nearly man after making a nerveless final hole birdie to win the US PGA.
In a tense finish, Schauffele needed to scramble to save par from a fairway bunker on the 17th. Needing a birdie on the par-5 final hole, Schauffele hit his tee shot 325 yards to the edge of a fairway bunker. With both feet in the sand, he hit a 4-iron over water and chipped up and made the biggest putt of his life for a closing 65.
Schauffele, who had last won at the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open, fought back tears after his final putt finally dropped in the hole. “I was kinda emotional after that putt lipped in,” he smiled. “It has been a while since I won. My father is in Hawaii and I just managed to speak to him. I had to hang up pretty quickly because he was bawling down the phone.”
