World Meteorological Organisation confirms -69.6°C as lowest temperature ever recorded in Northern HemisphereA temperature of -69.6°C has been recognised by the World Meteorological Organisation as the coldest temperature ever recorded in the Northern Hemisphere.

It still pales in comparison to the world’s coldest temperature of -89.2°C , recorded at the high-altitude Vostok weather station in Antarctica on 21 July 1983. Commenting on the new record, WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas said: “In the era of climate change, much attention focuses on new heat records. This newly recognised cold record is an important reminder about the stark contrasts that exist on this planet.
