Mary Kennedy, a 61-year-old woman, was diagnosed with bowel cancer after participating in the HSE's free national bowel cancer screening programme. Despite feeling healthy and displaying no symptoms, she decided to take the test kit provided by the programme and sent off a stool sample for analysis.

“It came with really clear instructions and I sent off my sample. About a week later, I got a letter back to say that they had found blood in my sample and it wasn’t visible to the naked eye. “The HSE programme was really good, because they stayed in contact and I went for a colonoscopy. I was told by the nurse that day that I had bowel cancer.

“Hearing the word cancer was very scary. I struggled to even say it when I was telling people afterwards.”
