e problem of equating leadership to historic hero examples as she launches her new book. This is the sentiment I hear when working with highly successful and ambitious women. When we have a notion about what a leader looks like, it can get in the way of who is leading. The people who say this to me often lead differently to what they were told was “great” leadership or in their ideas about leadership.
Sile speaks about the most well-known source of leadership, positional leadership, which is the leadership that is directly tied to an organisational position. Therefore, the source of influence is through that position. Without “followership” there is no leadership, and this reframing of leadership allows us to focus on the relationship between leader and follower rather than placing leadership as an identity.Leadership can only be a role you fulfil for some time; it is not an identity. While transferring leadership skills from one organisation to another is possible, people often need to remember that the quality of their influence and the source of their leadership greatly determine their effectiveness.
