Patrick Kielty became visibly emotional at one point during the interview

Michelle O'Neill made an historic appearance on Friday night's Late Late Show after becoming the first nationalist First Minister of Northern Ireland in its history two weeks ago.

Host Patrick Kielty then broached the topic of the violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, asking if O'Neill would attend IRA commemorations now that she is in such a prominent and symbolic position. Speaking on the peace granted by the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, O'Neill said: "The society that I was born into and that you were born into is completely changed for the better.

O'Neill responded: "It doesn't matter how you were hurt or who hurt who. What does matter is that all pain is the same and we have to absolutely respect that and understand it. Even better than that, let's make sure that those circumstances never ever arise again." One commenter wrote on X: "Very engaging and confident performance by Michelle O’Neill on Late show tonight. Maybe there’s hope for the future if others can step up. I really think so, we should be capable of change."
