Image: UPI/PA Images LEO VARADKAR WILL travel to Washington for the annual St Patrick’s Day visit if no government has been formed by 5 March.

He had previously indicated that he would also travel to Boston as part of the St Patrick’s Day visit stateside. The situation is reminiscent of that which arose during government formation talks in 2016 when Enda Kenny flew to Washington to meet with then-US President Barack Obama for St Patrick’s Day.

Speaking in the Dáíl last night, Varadkar said the government will continue to carry out its duty until a new government has been appointed.

I think trumps been saying “ and you’ve been smoking this shit”? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Always baffled me why the leader of the country left on a national holiday, surely it would be welcoming to bring foreign dignitaries to Ireland for St. Patrick's day. (I get the fact that politicians should love the free junket abroad)

I'm sure the Donald will be overjoyed to meet him. 🙄

Did he not say a few days ago about people wanting to be careful of change He signalled out Boris and Trump what a hypocrite

Lame duck meets Donald duck🦆

Finally Trump will look competent beside another politician.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are two cheeks of the same arse-holes who have been greedily engorging themselves from the Public purse with no accountability ever.

And would do anything fore canopes.....

Anyone should go rather thsnnLeo. He no longer represents the Irish people

Why are we sending a back bench TD to meet the best American president in history

Bono is busy coaching the Irish Rugby team

Why? Surely it should be a representative of Sinn Fein.

I'd rather bono went 🙄

Any chance they’ll travel on one way tickets!!

Why is Leo bringing Trump his dinner?

No problem with that. There shouldn’t be a minister or care taker minister left in the house on Paddy’s day. No country has a worldwide event like ours.

Should be deferred until we know who the real Taoiseach is. Or until after she assumes her office.

Going to see Sinn Féins biggest donars😜😜😋

Saint Patrick's day its called. Ye show know better. Derogatory term. Cop on!

Will their physical bulk or their egos be slimmed down Give me one wish. That when they go, they don’t come back.

“St Patrick’s Day” - drop the slang please, you are supposed to be above a university freesheet publication.

Hope he runs his mouth off over there about SF I don’t think Irish Americans will take to kindly to his petulant whinging

Why Not even Taoiseach anymore!Spending money we dont have FFS.

If we don’t have a government why do we foot the cost of sending anyone? 🤔

Any chance he could stay over there
