We need to do as we are asked – whether we like what we are hearing or not

Somewhat naively, I expected everything we learned about ourselves and each other during this crisis to be positive: how we can all pull together as a team, how we can work towards one common goal, how resilient we are as a nation.Global pandemic. Huge words. Our current leadership is strong, and what it needs is discerning followers, not self-appointed “leaders” vying for the limelight and thereby muddying the message.

During Government and HSE briefings on Twitter I watch with horror as the screen fills with comments about whether the Leaving Cert should still go ahead as planned or for further clarity on exam timetables. How can so many believe that the Leaving Cert belongs in the same conversation as announcements on fatalities, updates on the number of positive cases and our health system’s capacity to cope?

Not following good leadership hinders the leader and everyone else. In this context it exposes us as a nation that doesn’t value learning for its own sake. Surely it isn’tabout the end exam? Why wouldn’t a young person of school age want to learn, regardless of whether the exam takes place or not? If the Leaving Cert is cancelled in the morning, what will those young people do?

This is absolute rubbish.

The cognitive dissonance present in a sentence and a half

‘’We have clarity. The exams are going ahead in late July or early August. There is a chance this may not end up actually happening’’....that’s not clarity....general premise of the article is stick your hand in the fire if you are told to do so...utter rubbish

Well meaning but naive piece.

The point the chap is making I think is resilience of future generations. Whilst understandable on building resilience the culture and community to do so is not currently there. The LC should be dealth with in mocks and decades of data on improvement grades adjusted

This nonsense of 'obey your leaders at all costs' 🙄school in Galway has just effectively demonstrated why this is bullshit by 'disobeying'official advice and cancelling the Junior Cert for this yr. Well done them 👏🏻 everything should be questioned. Or leaders are not infallible.

The secret teacher: why the need for the secrecy? If you have an opinion that you’d like to share in a national newspaper then put your name to it otherwise it’s just hate mail.

Wait a minute, is the secret teacher LeoVaradkar ?

Absolute horseshite here. We live in Ireland, a democracy. People are allowed have their say. What you refer to in that article is a dictatorship eg. China. Would you rather we all sit back and blindly follow politicians? Unelected politicians I should add!

Am I reading this right? You’re essentially blaming leaving cert students for wanting to know what’s gonna happen with the exam? I mean it’s not like it’s a very stressful exam that has a huge role in determining their future and is being made more stressful by uncertainty.

Coronavirus: Beware politics over science in reopening economyOpening things up gradually alongside a comprehensive test, trace and isolate regime stands a chance of success Dumbest headline ever. There is not one shred of proof that ‘lockdowns’ save lives. It is opinion, not science. We have proper testing in place now - near the top in the world. When the hospital admissions start to recede - question is - who to test at 15k per day capacity - random. Got to take a measured risk and start lifting restrictions sometime. Hospital admissions will be best guide. MichelleBride Indeed.
