Health experts are urging the public to be wary of getting aesthetic treatments from unqualified individuals as RTE Investigates shows the dodgy side of Ireland's beauty industry

RTE Investigates has uncovered how prescription-only products such as Botox are being administered in Ireland by unqualified individuals.

The aesthetics industry is popular in Ireland as record numbers of people avail of different popular cosmetic procedures such as lip fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, teeth procedures and much more. All cosmetic treatments can be carried out by reputable clinics across the country, but the problem is that people on social media platforms can also do this away from the glare of any regulation.

Only doctors, dentists or registered nurses directed by a medical doctor can administer Botox, with Aesthetic Medicine explaining: "This is a prescription only medicine. In Ireland the rules are clear. And anyone else is acting illegally." In England, it's illegal to administer Botox to people aged under 18, but in Ireland there are no regulations to restrict the age.

The documentary also shows how large quantities of prescription products are being flown and posted to Newry, for beauticians to collect nationwide.
