Trainer's horse Firstman had failed a drugs test at Dundalk racecourse in January 2023

A seven-time Cheltenham Festival winning trainer is to lose his licence for three months after an Irish Horse Racing Regulatory Board appeals committee hearing on Thursday.

His 13-8 favourite and easy winner tested positive for lidocaine, a local anaesthetic prohibited on race day, and was disqualified. Cartrophen has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and was said by the IHRB's head of anti-doping Dr Lynn Hillyer to be "used to treat osteoarthritis in horses" – twice by two separate vets, on the day before the race.

In December he was also fined €1,000 for failing to maintain a complete medicines register at his Co Meath yard.
