Paul Townend became the joint most winning jockey of the Gold Cup on Friday after guiding Galopin Des Champs to victory as Willie Mullins landed another three Cheltenham Festival wins.
He said: “To be honest it feels different to all the other ones to be honest. I can’t really believe it. I’m a bit lost for words. He pulled out every stop, and we went for reserves in the last furlong that only the very best have. And Mullins will now aim to return for a tilt at a third Gold Cup win with Galopin Des Champs next year, which would see him become the first horse since Best Mate to win the race three times.
Galopin Des Champs became just the ninth horse to win the race more than once, and was the shortest-priced winning favourite of the Gold Cup, bar Best Mate in 2004 , since Arkle in 1966.
