Minister warns failure to adopt higher-level ceilings under new carbon budget means ‘Ireland will miss its climate targets’

Minister for Climate Eamon Ryan. He confirmed the Cabinet would sign off on sectoral ceilings as proposed by him before the summer recess as they were a critical part of the country's first-year carbon budget. Photograph: Gareth Chaney/ Collins PhotosMinister for Climate Eamon Ryan has said all sectors must accept the higher level of ceilings on carbon emissions in spite of indications of unrest among rural backbenchers in Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael on the implications for agriculture.

Mr Ryan acknowledged there were real challenges for every sector from having to adopt higher limits, including agriculture, as “the maths [indicating what limits need to be applied] cannot be wished away”. Chairman of the Oireachtas Agriculture Committee Jackie Cahill said, however, the carbon-reduction target must not exceed the minimum 22 per cent figure. He told the Farmers Journal new funding had to be put in place to support farmers. “There are new technologies that farmers can employ to reduce farming’s carbon footprint, but they cost money.”

Earlier this month Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said he envisaged a “lesser” target for the sector “because it is special”, and that “we are treating it differently because it involves food production and the rural economy”. Green party TD Brian Leddin denied the negotiations were causing tension within the Coalition. But he criticised those who were invested in one sector over others, underlining that if one is given a lesser target that “has to be compensated elsewhere”.

Muppet

Go to the max yourself, stop flying out of the country every other day 🤡

Why is the media just refusing to ask this clown the state of Dublin airport, he is minister for transport and the buck stops with him..he has done a round of interviews this week and not one q put to him about the disgrace in the airport..kids gloves interviews

Somebody ought to cut him

And what about the emission cuts of the billioners and their politician lapdogs? We are going to be condemned to eat cockroaches while they are flying on private jets. Who do you serve? Definitely not the people of this country.

And I would expect the leader of the Green party to go to his personal max. Has Mr Ryan finally given up meat?

You never hear a peep from the climate change head bangers abput India or China who put out most of the world's carbon emissions. They only want the West to cut its emissions and go back to the stone age.

Go away

On our worst year we wouldn't emit what Germany,uk ,USA,china Russia etcetc emit in a day . We are a small country with a small manufacturing holding compared to most countries. Only way to reduce carbon emissions is to stop buying shit and live like hippys.

Ireland share of global emissions is below insignificant, meanwhile rural wage workers in poverty because of your fuel taxes. Eat 💩 Eamon

that's a bit rich coming from a wolf loving, turf hating Lettice muncher who stands over increasing data centres nationally,

We'll go 'to the max' at the next general election. Happy to tell him 'On your bike' on that day, which can't come soon enough!
