Sinn Féin TD for Donegal Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has said that cross-border travel should be allowed to resume once done responsibly, despite concerns from the Northern Ireland Minister for Health Robin Swann about people from the Republic coming into Northern Ireland.
Mr Mac Lochlainn told RTÉ's Morning Ireland that a phased return to cross-border travel needs to happen to give people hope and to see progress after all the sacrifices they have made. He said that the virus numbers are going in the right direction in Donegal and that it is "moving out of the crisis".Mr Mac Lochlainn said that while National Public Health Emergency Team is supporting a return to inter-county travel, it should happen in a phased manner.
He urged people to "hold back" on retail shopping in the North for a few weeks, to shop locally and not to go north of the border in large numbers. He said we need to "break down the border" and allow people from Northern Ireland to come into Donegal to walk on the beach.
